Training from the enforcement side of the desk
Housing Standards Academy was founded by San Nyunt, a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and housing standards specialist. Every course is designed and developed by a practitioner, for practitioners: someone who inspects properties, scores hazards, serves notices and defends decisions as their day job.
What we teach
The Academy’s curriculum covers the whole craft of housing standards work:
- The built environment: housing construction, defects and building pathology, understanding buildings well enough to diagnose them with confidence.
- Housing law: the Housing Act 2004, the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 and current legislation, including landlords’ and tenants’ rights and obligations.
- Enforcement practice: HHSRS assessment, powers under the Housing Act 2004 and the Renters’ Rights Act, notices, rent repayment orders, unlawful eviction and harassment investigations, witness statements, prosecutions, and choosing the right tool to secure compliance.
Launching with HHSRS
We are opening the curriculum with the subject every housing professional in England must master this year: HHSRS, the reformed rating system in force from June 2026.
- HHSRS Transition Course (Foundation): the bridge from the 2006 system to HHSRS, what changed, why, and how the new system works.
- HHSRS Refresher Course (Refresher): for practitioners trained on the 2006 system who need to carry their judgement over to HHSRS.
- HHSRS Practitioner Course (Full competency): evidence, scoring judgement and defensible decisions, taught on the official 2026 case studies.
The wider curriculum follows the HHSRS launch.
Accuracy you can rely on
Housing enforcement is contested work: scores are challenged, notices are appealed and evidence is tested. So the Academy holds its own content to the same standard. Courses are audited line by line against the current guidance and the underlying statutes, corrections are logged, and when the law moves the courses move with it.
